The word 'safari' originates from the Swahili word for ‘journey’. While much of safari Africa has moved with the times, occasionally losing a bit of character, Kenyan safaris remain true to those carefree olden-days, with horse-riding, flights in bi-planes from Out of Africa, and the rest.
The wildlife viewing and the diversity of habitats make Kenya a phenomenal place to visit.
Kenyan safari is most associated with the famous Maasai Mara in the south-west of the country. The Mara is one the best places for viewing big cats in all of Africa. Visiting the Mara region also provides an opportunity to learn about the fascinating Maasai culture. If you are planning to see the Great Migration, it’s important to get your timing right - the wildebeest and zebra only pass through the Maasai Mara in search of food for a couple of months each year.
There are many other wonderful safari destinations across the country too, which include: the Laikipia Plateau, the Samburu, Tsavo East and West and Amboseli. More remote than these are stunning plateaus, vast lakes and mountains to climb.
To complement a safari, there is no better place to visit than Kenya’s 430km coastline, dotted with spectacular beaches and luxury lodges. Diani and Watamu are world class destinations in their own rights.
